How the calculations work
Total compound amount ÷ total liquid volume. Example: 10 mg ÷ 2 mL = 5 mg/mL.
Milligrams and micrograms are interchanged mathematically. 0.5 mg = 500 mcg.
Target aliquot amount ÷ concentration. Example: 500 mcg ÷ 5,000 mcg/mL = 0.100 mL.
Total compound quantity ÷ target aliquot quantity.
This calculator performs mathematical dilution and concentration calculations for laboratory research. It does not provide instructions for preparing materials for human or veterinary administration.
mg and mcg are different
- 1 mg = 1,000 mcg
- 5 mg = 5,000 mcg
- 10 mg = 10,000 mcg
Why liquid volume matters
Adding more diluent does not change the total compound quantity. It changes the compound quantity present in each millilitre.
Graduated scale equivalence
- 1 mL = 100 scale increments
- 0.5 mL = 50 scale increments
- 0.3 mL = 30 scale increments
